Since the broadcast industry has always used bare solid copper wire, it has become the standard for radial systems. However, it doesn't make any practical difference whether the copper wire is stranded or solid, bare or insulated.
Some hams find that stranded, insulated copper wire is easier to work with, and the copper doesn't degrade quite as quickly.
