Chicken wire is not a suitable alternative for a radial system.
Where the wires intersect, they are simply twisted together. This provides mechanical strength, but the wires are not bonded together properly for electrical conduction at RF frequencies. These wires will rust or corrode over time. This often results in the wire joints acting as rectifiers and thus become potential noise generators.
